Aussie Super Bowl Saturday. Well, Friday.

It's that magical time of year. The "one day in September", celebrated beginning tonight US time and into the wee hours of Saturday.

That's right. It's time for the Australian Rules Football Grand Final. The Aussie Super Bowl. Drinking while watching large men run into each other. Awesome.

My team is having a function that we are running at a pub near the Capitol Building, cramming as many people in as possible to cheer on the game while drinking as much as possible. The function starts at 10pm, the game kicks off at 12:15am, and finishes up somewhere around 3:30am. Last year I got so wasted that it was only halfway through the last quarter that I realised the game was amazingly close.

This year's contest is between the Port Adelaide Power and the Geelong Cats. Let me be blunt: I hate Port Adelaide, so fuck them. As for Geelong, they are the Buffalo Bills of Aussie Rules, losing four Grand Finals in seven years from 1989 to 1995. Their fans are either insane with anticipation of finally winning a Grannie, or sick with the anticipation of losing again.

In case it wasn't clear, I'm cheering for Geelong (sorry Dad - I know you're cheering for the non-Victorian team, but there you go). The fear is that Port Adelaide kicks the crap out of Geelong, but let's hope for a close one, shall we? After all, the last couple have been barn-burners.

What a pity I have to start work tomorrow at 9am. Pray for me.

Arguably the best Geelong football player ever, Gary Ablett. His nickname? God. No, really.

  • Watched it at a backpackers hostel resort in Cairns in a bar. Let's just say I was shitfaced, and lets further say that who didn't know Geelong was going to rape the shit out of Adelaide? because I sure did.

How was that for a barn burner?
